Fred was born June 16, 1931, in Kansas City, KS, a son of Fred Walker and Aletha Lucille (Keplinger) Viar. He lived in Kansas City, MO, graduating from Central High School in 1948. After enlisting in the Air Force in 1951, Fred served as a flight engineer at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, AZ, until his honorable discharge in 1955. He returned to Kansas City with his wife, Gloria and their children, and began a 39 year career with Employers Mutual Companies as claims adjuster and claims manager of the Kansas City region. Fred was later united in marriage to Winnie Burgen, on April 12, 1968, in Sallisaw, OK. Their blended family moved to Harrisonville and enjoyed the rural Cass County life where Fred thought the sky was always bluer, the air a little cleaner, and the colors more vibrant. He was past president of the Kansas City Claims Managers Council, the Kansas City Claims Managers Association, and the Broadway-Valentine Optimist Club. Fred and Winnie were also charter members of the Harrisonville Knot Hill Gang.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Winnie. He is survived by two sons, Rick Viar and wife Kim, Lee's Summit, and Mick Viar, Glendale, AZ; two daughters, Patricia Leard and Lorry Viar, both of Kansas City, MO; two step-daughters, Donna Kaiser and husband, Chuck of Jordan, MN and Cheryl Sutton of Albuquerque, NM; brother, Jack Viar and wife, Jenny of Clinton, MO; sister, Barbara Van, Belton, MO; six grandchildren, Courtney, Rohman, Stacey, Joshua, Tara, and Tina, and three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Tanner, and Keaton.
Fred was a devoted husband who was always supportive of his family. He loved each of his children unconditionally and was tremendously proud of their accomplishments. Fred had a special place in his heart for animals. He had an insatiable sweet tooth. He loved to piddle around in his workshop, hunt, fish, and enjoyed vacations with Winnie . . . and baseball hats. He enjoyed a deep and lifelong friendship with his buddies at Blackwell Sanders, particularly Bill Sanders, Larry McMullen, and Marty Loring. The family especially appreciates the loving care and support provide by Annette, Kenzie, Elisa, Evergreen Home Companion, and Village Hospice.
Fred's quick wit and ability to make us smile with his comedic timing will be missed by all.
