Fred George Helmick, 89, Harrisonville, MO, died Friday, March 30, 2007 at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, MO. Burial was in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Military honors were under the auspices of the Harrisonville Honor Guard.

Fred was born December 5, 1917 in Mitchell, Nebraska, the son of Fredrick Charles and Adella Florence (Keimig) Helmick. He married Stella Lucille Hiler on December 22, 1938 in Olathe, KS.

Fred had worked at the Harrisonville Foundry and as manager for the Refrigerated Locker Service in Harrisonville for 22 years. He retired in 1983 from Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville, as Chief Engineer. Fred was a member of the Harrisonville First Baptist Church. Fred was a WWII Army veteran, serving in Europe under General George Patton, with the 3rd Army-16th Armored Division-216th Engineers. He was a life member of the VFW Post 4409 and the American Legion Post 42, Harrisonville and faithfully attended meetings. He was a past Commander of the American Legion. He recently donated WWII memorabilia to the American Legion and VFW Hall. Fred was a volunteer for the Hurley Lee Spicer Post - American Legion Volunteer Fire Department in the 1950's and 1960's. He loved to tinker in his garage and workshop. Fred collected antique farm items and was an avid gardener and loved his flowers.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Robert, John and Ralph Helmick. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille, Harrisonville, MO; two daughters, Helen Louise Cobb and her husband, Wayne and Janice Marie Harper and her husband, Jack, all of Harrisonville, MO; one granddaughter, Kathy Lambertz and her husband, Traey and two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Erin Lambertz, all of Harrisonville, MO; two sisters, Florence Bell, Harrisonville, MO and Alberta Simon, Cleveland, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.
