Forrest "Pete" Leon Garrett, 83, Harrisonville, MO, died Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, KS. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Faith Baptist Church in Harrisonville. Burial will be in Gentry Cemetery in Quincy, MO. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 11 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Gentry Cemetery, P.O. Pete was born October 3, 1927 in LaHarpe, IL, the son of William Orben and Sylvia Opal (Anders) Garrett. He was raised in Downing, MO and graduated from high school there. He was a WWII Army veteran, serving in Japan and Korea. Pete was honorably discharged from service and attended Finlay Engineering College and earned his degree as a Civil Engineer.
Pete worked for Convair in California and then for the highway departments in Kansas City, MO, Bonesteel, SD and for the state of New Mexico. He married Mary Faye Wilson in 1963. The couple moved to Harrisonville, MO in 1968 with their daughters, Cheryl and Sidonie.
Pete worked for MO Dept of Transportation for 21 years as an engineer on roads and bridges. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Harrisonville for many years, moved his membership to Faith Baptist Church and was very committed to his church family. Pete will be remembered as a storyteller and a man of an abundance of good humor. He was a devoted father and dedicated to his family and friends and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Pete had a strong will and a generous heart and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Faye Garrett, his daughter, Cheryl, his sister, Wanda DeBord and brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Shirley Garrett. He is survived by his daughter Sidonie, his sister Juanita, brothers- and sisters-in-law, Bill and Ruth Ann Hash and Don and Norma Calvert; his nieces and nephews, Larry and Denise Garrett, Mark and Dianna Walter, Wendell and Kay Wilson, Robert and Kathy Alpers, Paul and Carolyn Jett, Charlie and Kathy Calvert and Brian and Shelly Hash.
