Obituary

Ferne Adele (McAfee) Briscoe, 89, of Raymore, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri. A memorial service was held on Sunday, March 1, 2020  at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Memorial contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society.

Ferne  was born November 11, 1930 in Carroll, Iowa, a daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Briscoe) Shepard.  She grew up in Slater, Missouri and was a 1949 graduate of Slater High School.  Ferne was united in marriage to Marvin K. McAfee on July 2, 1949. They made their home in Independence, MO for 43 years before his death.  She next made her home in Harrisonville, where she met and married Jack Briscoe.  She moved to the Foxwood Community in Raymore in 2001. Ferne worked as a wedding consultant for Englewood Gift and Jewelry in Independence for a number of years. She had belonged to the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Independence, the First Christian Church in Harrisonville, and the Raymore Christian Church.

Ferne was a founding member of Heart of America Glass Collectors Club. She volunteered at the VA Hospital in Kansas City in occupational therapy area and volunteered at Foxwood Springs in various capacities, including managing the gift shop. When she volunteered at Foxwood, she pieced and quilted at least 200 baby and toddler quilts, which were all donated and sold at the Foxwood Gift Shop. Ferne loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with a fierce intensity. Each one of them thought they were her favorite. She loved gardening, cooking, sewing, flower arranging, collecting glass, teapots, and teacups.

Ferne was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands: Marvin McAfee and Jack Briscoe; two daughters: Teresa McAfee Butcher and Cheryl McAfee; and three brothers: Lawrence Shepard Jr., Donald Shepard, and James Shepard.

She is survived by two daughters: Kristen (Raymond) Hawley, Harrisonville, MO and Marilyn Keck, Oak Grove, MO; a sister, Gwen Andrew, Lee's Summit, MO; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
