Fern Marie Hampton, 98, Harrisonville, MO, died Sunday, June 1, 2008 at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville. Funeral services 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Pleasant Prairie Baptist Church, Belton, MO. Visitation 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, June 3 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville. Burial in West Union Cemetery, Cleveland, MO. Fern was born October 10, 1909 in Lisle, MO, the daughter of George Enoch and Alice Dean (Jones) Mitchell. She married Raymond Lewis Hampton on May 4, 1929 at the Harrisonville Baptist Church parsonage. Fern received her teaching certificate from Warrensburg Teacher's College and taught at Pleasant Valley School.
Fern loved the outdoors. She enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens and fishing. She also loved to read and subscribed to the Wolfner Library for the Blind. She had read over 791 books on tapes. Fern gave birth to her children at home. She quilted, traveled and liked to reminisce about her travels. She was a member of the Elizabeth Chapter #142, Order of Eastern Star, Belton, MO for over 69 years.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond in 1971, one son, William G. Hampton and his wife, Karen and one brother-in-law, George Burleigh Storms. She is survived by one son, Larry B. Hampton, Belton, MO; three daughters, Reita R. Hampton-Coots and her husband, Lee, Okeechobee, FL, Tressa Sargent and David Davenport, Peculiar, MO and Janice Fogle and her husband, John, Peculiar, MO; one sister, Vera E. Storms, Harrisonville, MO; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
