Evalyn M. Winkler, 92, Lee's Summit, MO, formerly of Harrisonville, MO, died Friday, January 7, 2011 at John Knox Village Care Center, Lee's Summit. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 11 at the Harrisonville United Methodist Church with visitation from 10:00-11:00 at the church. Burial will be in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cass County MU Alumni Association, Vernon & Evalyn Winkler Scholarship Fund.
Evalyn was born December 11, 1918 in Joplin, MO, the daughter of Clarence and Dessa (Carman) Martin. She was a proud 1943 graduate of the University of Missouri, Columbia. She married Vernon Winkler on June 25, 1943 in Shelbina, MO, whom she met at MU. She taught home economics, science and 8th grade in Memphis, MO and at Harrisonville for 20 years, while also happily performing her role as a farm wife, before retiring in 1979.
Evalyn was a member of the Harrisonville United Methodist Church, Progressive Priscillas Extension Club, Lioness Club, Clay Potters Club and the MU Alumni Association. Her hobbies included China painting, dominoes, sporting events, travel and family gatherings. Her family enjoyed her excellent cooking and warm hospitality.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Vernon on September 4, 1986. She is survived by four sons, Dr. Jim Winkler and wife, Rita, Denver, CO, Tom Winkler and wife, Barb, Lee's Summit, MO, Marty Winkler and wife, Cathy, Overland Park, KS and Bill Winkler and wife, Shirley, Ashland, KY; one sister, Louise Tingle and husband, Ralph, Salem, OR; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
