Elsie Ann Beckman, 92, formerly of Lee's Summit, MO, Garden City, MO, Marathon, FL & Bradenton, FL, died Friday, June 29, 2012 at Gables Assisted Living in Overland Park, KS. Memorial services will be held 11:00am Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Christ Lutheran Church, 11720 Nieman Road, Overland Park, Kansas 66210.
Elsie Anna Kwirant was born September 2, 1919 in Great Falls, Montana to German-born Elise (born Baker) Stahlecker and Russian-born Rudolf Kwirant (Qwirant). Orphaned by the age of six, Elsie and her siblings were placed in various boarding homes (paid by the estate of her parents) until the 8th grade. In the 8th grade, Elsie started working for her room and board, earning $5 a month, plus room & board and one night off a week. She paid for all her own clothing by babysitting, preparing meals and doing various chores for the family she was living with. She walked 16 blocks to the Trinity Lutheran Church twice a week for church and youth meetings. As a senior in high school, she moved in with her sister Katie and her husband Victor Johnson. She walked across the prairie in Great Falls to school daily. After graduating from high school, she went to visit her sister, Mary Herndon in Raytown, Missouri. This was during the Depression and work was hard to find. After several years of waitressing and working various jobs, Elsie received the last of her parents' money and used it to enroll at the Beauty School at 14th & Main in Kansas City. She graduated and worked for various beauty shops in Kansas City & Lee's Summit. When the war broke out, she invested in her own business and opened up Elsie's House of Beauty in downtown Raytown and had a thriving business during the war years. Elsie married John Charles Bogner, and to this union four children were born. He preceded her in death. In 1979, she married Ronald Beckman. Ann was an avid seamstress, cook, homemaker and loving wife and mother.
She was proceeded in death by her parents; her half-siblings: Eugene Stahlecker, Mary Herndon, Katherine Murphy & Charles Schleppe; her first husband, Charles Bogner, and her second husband, Ronald Beckman.
She is survived by four children: John Bogner, Colorado Springs, CO; Charles Bogner and wife, Vicki, Marshalltown, IA; Cathy Winkler and husband, Marty, Overland Park, KS; Lory King and husband, Chet, Versailles, MO. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and a niece, Kathleen (Schleppe) Nelick, Seattle, WA.
