Edith Mae Sweet, 93, Harrisonville, MO, died Sunday, January 7, 2007, surrounded by family at her son's home in Harrisonville. Funeral services were held January 11 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, officiated by Brother Alan Black, Butler, MO. Music by Brenda Black , vocalist and Austin Black and Cooper Black, guitarists. Honorary casket bearers were Kaleb Shaw, Cooper Black, Kolt Shaw and Clint Rhodes. Casket bearers were Brent Shaw, Jamie Rhodes, Justin Rhodes, Kyle Rhodes, Austin Black and Otto Sweet. Burial was in Belton Cemetery, Belton, MO. Eastern Star services were held Thursday morning at the chapel under the direction of Bayard Chapter No. 179, Order of Eastern Star, Harrisonville. Contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association.
Edith was born November 13, 1913 in Ardmore, Oklahoma, the daughter of George and Margaret Louella (Beal) Wise. Edith married Rex C. Shaw on January 8, 1936 in Olathe, Kansas. She later married David Sweet on May 28, 1949 in Benton County, Arkansas.
Edith worked as a manager for a department store in Barstow, CA. She was installed in 1963 and an active member of the Joshua Court No. 123 Eastern Star in Victorville, CA. She was a seamstress and famous for her crocheted afghans lovingly given away. An avid football fan, Edith converted from Raiders to the Chiefs upon her move to Kansas City. She also enjoyed playing cards with her family. Edith regularly wrote letters in beautiful cursive to her friends and remembered her family on every occasion with a note or card.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Patricia Ann Shaw, one brother, Melvin Wise, husbands, Rex Shaw and David Sweet, stepsons, Duane Sweet, Garey Sweet and Neal Sweet. Edith is survived by one son, Clint Shaw and his wife, Jean, Harrisonville, MO; three grandchildren, Sherry Rhodes and her husband, Jamie, Pleasant Hill, MO, Brenda Black and her husband, Alan, Butler, MO and Brent Shaw and his wife, Marla, Hamilton, Alabama; eight great-grandchildren, Justin Rhodes and Michelle Calahan; Kyle Rhodes and wife, Angie, Austin Black, Cooper Black, Amanda Shaw, Kaleb Shaw and Kolt Shaw; two great-grandchildren, Clint and Amy Rhodes; two stepsons, beloved step-family and nieces and nephews.
