Doris was born August 29, 1927 in Butler, MO, the daughter of Albert Sherman and Orpha Lee (Pulliam) VanEaton. She was a lifelong Cass County, MO area resident and was a 1945 graduate of Harrisonville High School.

Doris grew up during the depression. She spent a few summers living in Kansas City with an aunt so she would have money to buy her school clothes and supplies. In the summer of 1945, she worked as a Harvey Girl. For those of you who don't know what that is, she worked at Jack Harvey's Restaurant, which was located inside Union Station. The Harvey Girls would all look out the windows and wave when the soldiers got off or on the trains. On December 6, 1945, Doris married Clifford M. Shipley, after he returned home from the war. They eventually settled on a dairy farm in Cass County. Most of her years were spent working hard on the farm and raising her family. She loved her grandchildren and spent a lot of time outside with them, naming bugs, picking flowers and making jewelry out of dandelions. She taught them things only grandmas can.

Doris loved to play cards and all sorts of games. Traveling was a big favorite. She and Clifford went to Brownsville, Texas for the winters, but one of their favorite places was Salton Sea, California. Doris loved the outdoors and she spent a lot of time fishing. Collecting rocks and sea shells were also a favorite pastime. She had a passion for house plants. If a piece of a plant broke off, she couldn't bear to throw it away. She would have to put it in water to root. Doris was well loved and a great wife, mother and grandmother. It seemed as though she was a cat with nine lives. She had a lot of illness in her life and cheated death many times. When she died, she was a resident at Crown Care Health Center. She will be greatly missed.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clifford on August 9, 1984, an infant daughter, her daughter, Tina Bretz and a grandson, Troy Shipley. She is survived by two sons, Mick Shipley, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and Vic Shipley, Drexel, MO; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
