Doris Anne Butler, 86, Adrian, MO, died Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2016 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian with visitation from 10:30-11:30. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rural Fire Department, Crescent Hill Cemetery, Grace Hospice, or Adrian Public Library.
Doris Anne was born March 10, 1930 in Lathrop, MO. She was the second child of Jewell H. Walker and Ruth G. (Davis) Walker. Doris Anne spent her childhood growing up on a farm northeast of Lathrop. She attended a one-room school house; then Lathrop High School where she graduated in 1947. After graduating from high school Doris Anne went to Kansas City, MO where she attended Business College. She was given a placement test and placed in the 1947 graduating class. After graduation Doris Anne went to work for ADT as a secretary and bookkeeper; a job she was proud to tell others she held.
Doris Anne met James F. Butler on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend. They were united in marriage on March 19, 1948 in Lathrop at her parents' home. They were married 66 years before Jim passed away. In 1953 Doris Anne quit working so that she and Jim could start a family. Doris Anne and Jim had three children. In 1957 Doris Anne and Jim moved from Kansas City to a farm west of Passaic, MO. In 1959 the family moved to Adrian, MO and in 1961 they moved to a farm at Altona, MO and back to a farm in Adrian in 1964.
Doris Anne maintained the books for the barber shop that Jim ran from 1957 to 1983. She also kept the books for the farm, apartments, and trailer court they owned and managed. She was always active in her children and grandchildren's lives. Doris Anne had a love for reading which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. She worked on the farms with the animals and has even been known to use a hammer, saw and nails correctly.
Doris Anne was extremely talented and enjoyed her sewing, quilting and knitting. Her family members have many beautiful handmade quilts and afghans that may be passed down to future generations so they may cherish her talents.
Doris Anne was preceded in death by her husband, James Franklin Butler, her son, James Bradley Butler, her parents, Jewell and Ruth (Davis) Walker, and a sister, Eileen Groff. She is survived by a daughter, Elaine Jones, ( Robert), Grandview, MO; son, John Butler, Adrian, MO; three grandsons, David Jones, (Tristen), Humansville, MO, Michael Jones,( Ashley), Belton, MO, and Daniel Jones,( Samantha), Belton, MO; three great-grandchildren; her sisters, Carolyn McCafferty, Blue Springs, MO and Carmen Rodgers, Spokane, WA; and a brother, John Vic Walker, Union Star, MO, and many nieces and nephews.
