Obituary

Donald Lee Smith, 91, Belton, MO, passed away Monday, October 12, 2020 at Beautiful Savior Home in Belton, MO.  No services are scheduled.

Donald was born June 16, 1929 in LaTour, MO, a son of Roy Lee and Arthenia Izola (Luney) Smith.  He was a 1947 graduate of Leeton, Missouri High School and attended three years of college.  He served in the U.S. Army and was in the National Guard at the old Nike Base in Pleasant Hill, Missouri.  He was married as soon as he joined the Army in 1948.  He married Mary Belle Rickard of Luray, Virginia.  They had two daughters, Juanita Ann in 1950 and Donna Marie in 1951.  Mary preceded him in death in 1956.  Donald married Dorothy Frances Stephens on November 26, 1965 in Harrisonville.  They had lived in Pleasant Hill, MO for eight years before moving to Harrisonville in 1973.

Donald had worked for Bakan Plastics and Relex in Lee's Summit before retiring in 1982.  He was an avid gardener.  Donald was a Luthier for many years and had made many violins.  He loved golf and was a member of the Harrisonville Sand Greens Golf Club.  If it was 35 outside and sunny, he went golfing.  At one time he made remote control airplanes and flew them.  He loved making homemade wine.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothy on August 22, 2005.  He is survived by one son, Darrin Smith, St. Joseph, MO; three daughters: Valerie Gattenby, Archie, MO; Juanita Artuso, Kansas City, MO; and Donna McConville, Peculiar, MO; two brothers: Raymond Smith, Leeton, MO and Lowell Keith Smith, Florida; 8 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
