David Day Willhoite, 85, Adrian, Missouri, died Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at his son's home in Peculiar, Missouri, after a short battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2015 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian with visitation from 1:00-2:00. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery in Drexel, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Trinity Hospice or Wounded Warriors.
David was born June 12, 1929 in Drexel, Missouri, the son of Wayne "W.L." and Laura (Batsell) Willhoite. He joined the Army in 1947 and was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky. In April of 1948, he was deployed to Korea, where he was assigned to motor pool, hauling diesel between artillery and front lines. From 1949 to 1950 he was stationed at Matsushima Air Base in northern Japan. He returned to the U.S. in June 1950 and was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky for a year before returning to Korea in July of 1951. He received 2 silver stars and an occupation medal before leaving the Army in spring of 1953.
David was united in marriage to Lucille Metcalf on May 27, 1960 in Archie, Missouri at the Everett Community Church. They have three children; two sons, Lester and Davy and one daughter, Jeannie.
David retired in 1981, from MoDot as an equipment operator. He was a school bus driver for Blue Valley School District. He was a member of the Drexel Christian Church, the Drexel American Legion, Drexel VFW, and the Drexel Masonic Lodge. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing rummy, fishing, and going to the boats. He enjoyed seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his parents, W. L. and Laura, his wife, Lucille, two brothers, Wilbur and Gordon, a sister, Clara Lou, an infant granddaughter, Angela Weatherman, and an infant grandson, Jeffrey Weatherman. He is survived by two sons, Lester Smith and wife, Sue, Navarre, Florida, and Davy Willhoite and wife, Stacy, Peculiar, Missouri; a daughter, Jeannie Weatherman and husband, Jack, Drexel, Missouri; a brother, Phil Willhoite, Junction City, Kansas; grandchildren, Christina Mathieu, Michelle Barker, Deana Pereira, Shane Smith, Jack Weatherman Jr., Amanda Gregar, Rebecca Stuteville, Lindsey Willhoite, and Derek Willhoite ; 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
