Obituary

David Wayne Reece, 59, of Macomb, Illinois, formerly of Harrisonville, Missouri, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, April 27, 2026, at his home. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Interment  at Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Mental Health America or The Trevor Project.

Born on March 9, 1967, in Harrisonville, MO, David was the son of Richard "Dick" and Betty (Hickman) Reece, and grew up to be a remarkable individual whose brilliance, humor, and kindness touched the lives of many. David's early years were vibrant and active; he was a proud member of the Music Makers show choir and played saxophone in the school band. His passion for learning and creativity was evident during his time in 4-H, where he served as president of the council and crafted an award-winning shadow box that continues to hold a special place in the Reece family during the holiday season.

After graduating from high school, David's dreams soared as he pursued higher education. His high SAT scores and a generous scholarship from Hallmark Cards made it possible for him to attend Boston University, where he later transferred to the University of Missouri in Columbia. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1989 and went on to earn his Master's Degree in 1992. David's career as a network engineer in the telecommunications industry was marked by innovation, earning him several patents for his work.

A man of many interests, David was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, often engaging his family in spirited discussions about each game. He had a passion for growing hot peppers and creating hot sauce for his friends, albeit humorously unwilling to try his own creations due to their fiery nature. Known for his quick wit, David enjoyed sharing puns and silly Snapchat selfies that brought laughter to those around him.

David's heart was deeply rooted in his community, where he served as an active voice in the
Cass County Democrats and the My Dem Friends groups. His love for music shone brightly through his beautiful voice, and he inspired others to be their best selves with unwavering generosity and support. As we remember David, let us carry forward his unwavering belief in compassion and community, celebrating a life well-lived and a heart that touched so many.

David is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Karen (McEvers) Reece; their two cherished children, Michael Reece (fiancée, Moustapha Tall) and Elizabeth Reece; his parents, Richard and Betty Reece; his sister, Cynthia Reece; his brother, Stuart Reece (Rebekah); his nieces, Julia Reece Leslie (Logan) and Katie Reece; and many extended friends and family.
