Obituary

Chester Fulton Long, Jr., "Junior", 77, Peculiar, MO, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Research Belton Hospital in Belton, MO. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville, MO. Friends may call from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisonville Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 367, Harrisonville, MO 64701.

Junior was born December 25, 1931, in Harrisonville, MO, the youngest son of Chester F. and Lorene A. (Osburn) Long. He graduated from Harrisonville High School in 1949, where he served as president of his senior class. He began work as a teller at the Cass County Bank in Peculiar, MO. He then joined the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving on the aircraft carrier, The Valley Forge.


Junior married Charlsie Maxine Needs on June 5, 1951. After the Navy, Junior and Maxine made their home in Peculiar, MO, with Junior returning to the Cass County Bank. He retired in 1978 from the bank as executive vice-president. He remained on the United Missouri Bank's Board of Directors as an advisor. Junior purchased the Peculiar Farm Supply and worked here until his death. He cherished many friendships throughout his life from both the bank and the feed store.


Junior was a member of the Peculiar Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Peculiar Lions Club, president of the United Way Foundation for many years, and was vice-president of the Peculiar Charitable Foundation.


Junior was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in law, Dale Reasoner and one brother, Curtis M. Long. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxine, of the home; three daughters, Jamie Shipley (Bob) of Belton, MO, Victoria Long (Manfred) of Claremont, CA and Beth Files (Mark) of Lake Winnebago, MO; one brother, Oren O. Long, Valley Falls, KS; five grandchildren, Zac Reasoner, Toreston and Mackenzie Keil-Long, Ali and Taylor Files and one great-granddaughter, Olivia.


Junior was a lover of all animals, a faithful friend, and honest and hard worker, and a much loved husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
