Obituary

Charlsie Maxine Long, 82, Lee's Summit, Missouri, formerly of Peculiar, Missouri, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2015 in Raymore, Missouri. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri. No services are scheduled. Private inurnment will be held at a later date in Orient Cemetery. Donations may be made in Maxine's memory to the Harrisonville Animal Shelter, 1300 N. Clearwater Drive, Harrisonville, MO. 64701.

Maxine was born Sept. 21, 1933 in Versailles, Missouri to Max and Eunice (Prestridge) Needs. The family moved to Harrisonville, Missouri in 1935 where Maxine spent her childhood and graduated from Harrisonville High School in 1951. During high school she met the love of her life, Chester "Junior" Long. The couple was married on June 5, 1951 in Harrisonville and moved to San Diego where Jr. was stationed at the 32nd Street Naval Station. While in San Diego, they were blessed with two daughters, Jamie, born in 1952 and Victoria, born in 1953. The young family moved back to the area, settling in Peculiar, Missouri, and welcomed another daughter, Beth, in 1961.

Maxine was a member of the United Methodist Church of Peculiar and was involved with the Peculiar Lioness Club, The United Way and acted as a Girl Scout leader. In 1972 she attended the Nan Cralle floral school and designed for Nan's Flower Shop in Grandview, Missouri, Metcalf Floral Shop in Overland Park, Kansas and Artistic Flowers in Belton, Missouri. After an early retirement, Maxine and Jr. became business owners of the Peculiar Farm Supply in 1979 where they met many new friends and customers for over 30 years. After Jr. passed away in 2009, Maxine sold the family farm and business and moved to Lee's Summit to be near her daughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Eunice Needs, her husband, Chester F. Long, Jr., her sisters, Martha Jane LeClaire and Mary Ellen Maire, a brother, Willis Gene "Stubby" Needs, a son-in-law, Dale Reasoner, and two brothers-in-law, Jimmy C. Vansandt and Bobby Gene Maire. Maxine is survived by her three daughters, Jamie Shipley (Bob), Victoria Long, and Beth Files (Mark); 5 grandchildren, Zachary Reasoner (Jasmine), Alexandria Stringberg (Sean), Torsten Keil-Long (Ixchel), Taylor Files and Mackenzie Keil-Long; 2 great-grandchildren, Kyler Reasoner and Kaylee Reasoner; nieces and nephews, Dale Needs (Margie), Edith LeClaire, Gilbert LeClaire, Linda LeClaire, Glenda Needs, Max Needs, and her beloved dog, Squirt.
