Carolyn June Yoss, 75, Butler, Missouri, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Adrian United Methodist Church in Adrian, Missouri with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Prairie City, Missouri. Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, May 4 at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carolyn Yoss Music Education Endowment.
Carolyn was born June 18, 1938, to Fred and Ada (Page) Asman in Trenton, Missouri. After graduating from Trenton High School, she obtained her music education degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri. Carolyn began her teaching career in Appleton City, Missouri, where she met and married James Walter Yoss on August 11, 1963. Jim and Carolyn recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. Carolyn's life focused on dedication to her family. She and Jim have three children and five grandchildren.
During Carolyn's teaching career she taught in Appleton City, Rockville, Lowry City, and Adrian, Missouri. Jim and Carolyn opened Yoss Thriftway in 1972, where she worked as a bookkeeper. Carolyn was actively involved in the Adrian community. She was a member of the Adrian United Methodist Church, where she played the organ for over 40 years. She also participated in Mai Gray, a United Methodist Women's Circle. Carolyn was one of the founding members of the Adrian Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
Carolyn's life-long love of music was demonstrated by her membership in the Bates County Nostalgia Band, Overland Park Civic Band, and The American Legion Band. She dedicated countless hours to sharing her music. She gave piano lessons, prepared and accompanied students to attend district and state music contests, and played piano and organ at weddings, funerals, and special events. Her love of music will live on through contributions made to the Carolyn Yoss Music Education Endowment, a fund set up to help youth interested in music.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Jim; one sister, Doris Jane Stoner of Higginsville, Missouri; three children, Kari (Yoss) Scott and husband, Brent, Kip Yoss and wife, Susan and Kristi (Yoss) Cumpton and husband, RC; five grandchildren, Drew Scott, Aaron and Ian Yoss, Paige and Adam Cumpton, all of Adrian, Missouri. She is also survived by special nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.
