Carl was born January 24, 1932 in Boston, Arkansas, the oldest son of Orval and Helen (Yates) Smith. He lived in Arkansas during his childhood and moved to Missouri when he was 17. Carl worked at General Motors in Kansas City until 1952. He served our country in the U.S. Army during 1953-1954.
Carl loved to be outside working. He was a carpenter for Smith Construction, farmed and ran a bulldozer for Herb Gepford. Carl began farming on his own around 1985. He especially liked to harvest fescue, and was so successful at it that he came to be known as the "Fescue King". Even after he and Shirley started going to Texas, he had to get back to Missouri in time to start the fescue harvest. If Carl wasn't outside working, he was outside hunting or fishing. He looked forward to deer season every year. He also loved to turkey hunt and fish for trout. Carl had a love for dogs. His favorite dog was a little gray schnauzer named Frosty. Many of you will remember Frosty as Carl's constant companion.
Carl was a man who didn't mince words. You always knew where you stood with him. He put the fear into many of his niece's boyfriends, letting them know how he expected his nieces to be treated. Carl loved to laugh, play cards and had a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his card buddies in Missouri as well as Texas.
