Charles Wayne Reid, 90, Peculiar, Missouri, died Monday, March 11, 2013 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 15 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Wills Cemetery, Peculiar. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Wayne was born November 5, 1922 on the family farm two miles east of Peculiar, the son of Oscar Elton and Mary Estella (Pheasant) Reid. He attended the Thorngrove School and graduated from Peculiar High School in 1940. A lifetime resident of Peculiar, he spent his entire life as a farmer on the farm where he was born, raising sheep and cattle and various crops.
A lifelong Democrat, Wayne served for many years on the Cass County Central Democratic Committee and was the last Presiding Judge of the Cass County Court (1979-1986). He served on the boards of Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), United Missouri Bank, Baptist Medical Center, Casco Area Workshop, Cass County Board of Services, Wills Cemetery, Peculiar School District, Cass County Zoning Board and the West Peculiar Township Road District. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Peculiar, one of the founders of the Peculiar Lions Club and its longest living member, and a founding member of both Cass County Water District #10 and the Cass County Shrine Club. He was one of the original members of the Twin Pines Country Club in Harrisonville and the Cass County Historical Society. He was a Mason and a member of the Mounted Guard of the Ararat Shrine.
Wayne married Marjorie Jean Chaffin on May 21, 1944 at her parents' farm near Raymore, Missouri and enjoyed almost 60 years of marriage until her death in 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, an infant brother, Oscar Elton Reid and one grandson, Michael John Reid.
He is survived by two sons, Charles (Chuck) Reid, II and John (Jack) C. Reid and wife, Cathleen A. Shine, all of Peculiar, Missouri; his granddaughter, Emily Anne Reid of Washington, D.C.; his sister, Mary Elizabeth Jones of Lee's Summit, Missouri and one brother, Dr. Robert C. Reid of Lexington, Massachusetts.
