Obituary

Bruce Miles Sweet, Jr., 81 of Archie, MO, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, MO. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20 at the Atkinson Chapel. Burial will be in Garden City Cemetery in Garden City, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 4643 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108.

Bruce was born May 19, 1928 in Garden City, MO, the son of Bruce Miles and Ada Bertha (Zimmerman) Sweet, Sr. He married Barbara Page on July 7, 1951 in Garden City, MO. She preceded him in death on November 30, 1988.

Bruce worked for Lake City Ammunition Plant as a security guard for over 32 years before retiring in June, 1983. He then worked for Heittich as a security guard and for Sutherlands Ranch in Butler for two years. He later was the greens keeper at Twin Pines Country Club for 10 years. Bruce loved to mow. He was an avid reader and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Bruce was a member of the Butler Elks Lodge since 1985, serving as chaplain and later was a charter member of the Adrian Elks Lodge since June 7, 2009. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association. Bruce joined the Austin Baptist Church at age 17.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Herbert Eugene Sweet and his wife, Barbara. He is survived by one son, Vernon Sweet and his wife, Connie of Garden City, MO; one daughter, Mary Ford and her husband, Larry of Archie, MO; one brother, Charles R. Sweet and his wife, Patt of Harrisonville, MO; four sisters, Elaine McVay and her husband, Clarence of Harrisonville, MO, Rosemary Peterson and her husband, Larry of Adrian, MO, Ruth Ann Burgess and her husband, John of Benton AR and Bonnie Young and her husband, Forrest of Carthage, MO; two grandchildren, Mandy Trainer and her husband, Matt and Mike Ford and his wife, Amanda and five great-grandchildren, Jack Trainer, Bailey, Chloe, Aubrey and Will Ford.
