Bob Lee Downey, 82, Hermitage, MO, formerly of Adrian, MO, died Friday, June 19, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian. Friends may call from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian.
Bob was born January 28, 1927 in Adrian, MO, the son of Ralph Fremont and Opal Wuanita (Kelley) Downey. In his younger years Bob lived in the Adrian area and went to school in Burdette. Bob married Ila Maxine Horton on January 22, 1945. They were married 63 years and to this union three children were born.
Bob was a carpenter for 50 years and belonged to the carpenters union in Santa Anna, CA. He was an accomplished musician. He enjoyed playing music with family and friends and was even in a band. He played many instruments including the banjo and mandolin. Bob was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was well known for his coon hounds. Bob and Maxine lived a number of places and enjoyed traveling in their RV together. In addition to California, they lived in Prescott Valley, Arizona and Lake Havasu, Arizona where he drove a tour bus at the time the London Bridge was being moved there. They retired to Adrian in 1990 and shortly thereafter moved to Wheatland, MO. In Wheatland Bob continued his love of the outdoors, feeding the deer and fish from the banks of his pond.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Maxine, one sister, Betty Waits, two brothers, Dick and Glennis Downey and one niece, Wuanita. He is survived by one daughter, Linda Kearns of Hermitage, MO; two sons, Charles Downey and his wife, Linda of Budd Lake, NJ and Cliff Downey and his wife, Renee of Watson, MN; one sister, June Davidson and her husband, Ray of Boonville, MO; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Downey and Opal Downey; five grandchildren; seven great-grand children and many nieces, nephews and friends.
