Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, MO. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday at East Lawn Cemetery, Springfield, MO.
Bess was born July 5, 1920 in Pondfork, MO, the daughter of James Henry and Rosa Belle (Guthery) Bradley. She lived her early life near Pondfork in Ozark County. On July 7, 1941, she married Marion Vermillion. They lived most of their married life in the Kansas City, MO area. Bess retired in 1975 from Allied Signal (Bendix) in Kansas City as an electronics assembler.
While growing up in the Ozarks, hospitality toward others was a way of life and it followed Bess through her own life. Anyone who walked through her door, never left hungry. Her collection of antique dishes was notable and her cooking was exceptional. Most loved in her heart were her dogs, the Skipper Key's, which were considered family members. Bess was always taking pictures of her dogs as well as family members. Her interest in genealogy spanned years of collecting Bradley family history of events and pictures, dating back to the 1800's. She wished to preserve the past. Bess volunteered in the 1960's for the American Red Cross as a Grey lady for seven years. She helped the ill in Menorah Hospital to write letters, etc.
Bess slept with her old Bible in the headboard of her bed and firmly believed that death was the final enemy to be defeated and with God, she would begin her eternal life. Bess had been ill for several years with osteoporosis and macular degeneration. Through her determination she maintained her independence as long as possible and kept a good attitude. Her weakened body eventually failed her and her spirit departed. Thoughts and memories of Bess will live on in the hearts and minds of family and friends.
Bess was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marion, in 1991, five brothers, Wilbur, Jack, Bill, Gene and Clyde Bradley and one sister, Lula Howerton. She is survived by one sister, Delsie Delp, other relatives and friends.
