Barbara "Kay" Walker, 83, Goodyear, Arizona, formerly of Harrisonville, Missouri, died Monday, September 12, 2016 in Goodyear, Arizona. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 19 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri with visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Harrisonville Public School Foundation, P.O. Box 1000, Harrisonville, MO 64701.
Kay was born June 13, 1933 in Harrisonville, Missouri, the daughter of Marvin Jefferson and Mary Etta (Prewitt) Harvey. She was a 1951 graduate of Harrisonville High School. Kay married Vernon Lee Walker on March 1, 1953. Kay was a 4-H leader for many years and taught cooking classes. When the microwave became available, Kay taught microwave cooking classes to various clubs in the community. She even taught some of her bridge clubs' daughters how to bake. Kay was a member of the Pleasant Valley Extension Club and Stitch and Chat Club. She was a past Worthy Advisor of Harrisonville Assembly No. 36 International Order of Rainbow For Girls and a member of the Grand Cross of Color. She was also a member of P.E.O and had served as president of the Hutchinson School #62 School Board. Kay was a lifelong member of the Harrisonville United Methodist Church and was a member of the UMW.
Kay was co-owner of Family Center with her husband, Vernon and was a member of the Wheatbelt Merchandise Committee for over 20 years. When she and Vernon retired, they spent winters in Arizona and most summers at their lake home in Missouri. Kay loved to take pictures and started scrapbooking when they went to Arizona in the winters. She enjoyed making many scrapbooks for her children and grandchildren. Kay was also an avid bridge player and would go play wherever and whenever anyone needed an extra partner.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Vernon Kirk Walker, and her husband of 53 years, Vernon Walker on August 22, 2011. She is survived by two sons, Jef Walker and wife, Raylene, Rolla, Missouri, and Jay Walker and wife, Dawn, Farmington, Missouri; two daughters, Joy Mills and husband, Bill, Harrisonville, Missouri, and Jil Harding and husband, Steve, Buckeye, Arizona; two sisters, Ann Schleicher, Woodbine, Georgia, and Jane Land and husband, Gerald, Pleasant Hill, Missouri; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Kay was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and she always tried to make everyone happy.
