August "Gus" Alvin Hardwick, 87, of Harrisonville, MO, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at his home. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 14 at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, followed by interment in Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville, MO.
August was born on March 3, 1935 in Alton, MO, to Everett Hardwick and Fay Etta (Hensley) Hardwick. Gus grew up in Alton, MO, and graduated from Alton High School. After graduating, he enlisted in the US Air Force, serving three years and was honorably discharged. During his service, he was stationed at Foster Air Base in Texas and rose to the rank of Senior Airman, serving as an Armorer with the 451st Fighter-Day Squadron. He was in charge of the F-86 and later the F-100 fighter jets firing systems and bomber armament. He married Shirley Ann Johnson in 1961, and to this union they had one son, Kendal Joe Hardwick.
After serving his country, Gus settled in the Kansas City area where he began a 26-year career with Western Electric in Lee's Summit, MO. During this time he was re-married to Diane Warner in June of 1980, and to this union had two daughters: Angela Renee Hardwick and Andrea Faye Hardwick. Gus was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and friend. He would do anything to help someone in need. He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones, sharing stories and advice. Gus was also a faithful servant to the Lord. He always spoke of his faith in Christ and enjoyed visiting and praying with people.
Gus was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Lellous, Forest, and Oglesby; and three sisters: Lucille, Lois and Audrey. He is survived by his children: Kendal (Draceana) Hardwick, Angela Hardwick, and Andrea (Josh) Madsen; his greatest pleasure, his grandchildren: Kelsey, Andrew, Keira, Brayden, Ivy, and River; as well as, many nieces, nephews, and friends, including one very special friend, Diane Hardwick May.
A favorite scripture of Gus's is Rev 21:4 "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain."
