Obituary

Aubrey Lloyd Pulliam, 92, of Lee's Summit, Missouri, died Friday, May 9, 2008 at the Pleasant Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Funeral services 1:30 PM Monday, May 12, 2008 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, MO with visitation from 1:00-1:30. Burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Contributions may be made to Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.

Aubrey was born August 10, 1915, near Adrian, Missouri, the son of James Simeon and Ethel (Roberts) Pulliam. In his youth he joined the Adrian Methodist Church. Aubrey attended Mingo School and completed eighth grade at this rural school in Bates County. He graduated from Adrian High School in 1932, where he was a member of Future Farmers of America. He received the American Farmer Degree from FFA in 1934 at its seventh convention in Kansas City. Aubrey graduated from the University of Missouri in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in agriculture. In 1949, he received a Masters of Arts degree in social science from the University Of Illinois. His Doctor of Education degree was earned in 1956 from Michigan State University with a major in social foundations of education and a minor in anthropology and sociology. Aubrey also studied social sciences at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and did post-doctoral study in anthropology at the University of Oregon.

In 1938, Aubrey took a job with Equitable Life Assurance Society and lived in Iowa. He was drafted into the Armed Forces in April 1945 and served in the Air Force. He was honorably discharged in December, 1945 at the close of WW II. In March of 1946, he took a position with the Oregon State Agricultural Extension Service at Oregon State University. In 1947, he became a County Extension Agent in Linn County, Oregon.

Aubrey taught at Knox College, MacMurray College, Eastern Illinois University, Defiance College and at California State Polytechnic College. In the 1970's, Aubrey came back to his roots in Adrian, Missouri, to operate the family farm, and in the 1990's, he moved to Columbia, Missouri, and in 2007 back to western Missouri. Aubrey loved to read, study and write. He enjoyed MU football and basketball.

Aubrey was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel Pulliam. He is survived by a sister, Mildred Otto; a nephew, James C. Otto and wife, Evelyn; great-nephew, Brian Otto and wife, Jessica; great-niece, Carla Thomas and husband, Jonathan; great-great-nephews, Joseph and Braeden Thomas and great-great-niece, Makayla Otto.
