Obituary

Arthur "Gail" Smith, 71, Adrian, Missouri, died Monday, July 30, 2012 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. A memorial visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.

Gail was born September 7, 1940, in Lee's Summit, Missouri, the son of Don and Ruth (Snyder) Smith. At an early age, Gail developed a love for ball sports and was never seen without a basketball, or baseball and glove, in hand. He continued to play sports throughout high school. Gail earned his Bachelor's Degree from Central Missouri State University and enlisted in the United States Navy on September 19, 1963. He transferred into the Marine Corps March 8, 1966 and promptly joined the football team. Gail met Judy Milner and they were married May 14, 1973 in Miami, Oklahoma. They returned to Adrian, Missouri where together they built their home, with their own hands and determination, and raised two children over the course of 39 years.

Gail was a quiet, humble, loyal soul who knew no bounds when helping or caring for others. He would give all that he had to help another person in need. Gail touched many lives with his generosity and love.

Ball sports were Gail's greatest joy. Seldom did he ever not have his radio tuned into a game or shooting baskets in the backyard. His happiest days were spent out on the basketball courts and baseball fields, from dawn 'til dusk. Gail taught his children and grandchildren that what matters most isn't who wins or loses, just love the game itself.

Gail is survived by his wife, Judy; a son, Robert and wife, Karen; a daughter, Heather and husband, Aaron; three grandchildren, Meagan, Aubrey, and Conner; his brother, Harold and wife, Clara; and nieces, Cindy and Shanon. We love and miss you.
