Albert Harold Sherwood, 87, of Harrisonville, MO, died Thursday, December 3, 2009 at his home in Harrisonville. Graveside services were held Monday, December 7, 2009 at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Harrisonville.
Albert was born January 17, 1922 in Gerster, MO, the son of Nelson and Lydia Ann (Todd) Sherwood. He moved to Harrisonville at age 7 and was a 1939 graduate of Harrisonville High School.
Albert served 18 months in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Malvern, Iowa and Crouch, Idaho and was a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean War. The ship that he served on in the Atlantic Ocean was the DE208 USS Cofer, which was converted to the USS Cofer Attack Personnel Destroyer, APO 62, which participated in nine landings in the Philippians Islands and two assaults in Boreno. The USS Cofer had been outfitted with four LCVP landing craft which could carry 120 to 130 assault troops. The boats could be used as mine sweeps when called to do so. The ship was given credit for the destruction of three Japanese aircraft and aiding in the destruction of a 4th air craft, 3 shore batteries and 7 underwater mines. For these actions, the ship was awarded 8 battle stars.
Albert served 20 years in the Navy. Upon his retirement he made his home northwest of Harrisonville. He was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Harrisonville.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Juandelle, five sisters and five brothers.
