Wiley Donald “Don” Garrett, 89, Peculiar, Missouri, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the Liberty Terrace Care Center in Liberty, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri with visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, or Hospice Advantage, 1512 N. Church Rd., Liberty, Mo 64068.
Don was born February 1, 1924 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Wiley Addison and Ida Pauline (Pearson) Garrett. He had lived in the Kansas City and Peculiar, Missouri area for all of his life, except for time in the Army.
He was a WWII Army veteran and had served in various campaigns, including Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a past member of the VFW in Seibert, Colorado.
Don had worked as a sheet metal fabricator for Divine Lighting and Fixtures in Kansas City. He later retired from Mosler Mfg. in Grandview as shop manager. He took great pleasure in his hobby of gardening then sharing the vegetables and flowers with family and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Hazel Garrett, and three brothers, Orval, Durland, and Wayne. He is survived by one brother, Ralph Garrett, Peculiar, Missouri; one sister, Nadine Hewitt, San Rafael, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his beloved dog, Lucy.
